Starting with SEO – From a beginners perspective
By Kondo Kondo
I have been trying to learn Search engine optimization(SEO) for about a year now, I will list bellow how I started and a few simple things that I learned on the way. To start with it is important to understand how Google is ranking sites, I will explain it very simplified. Google most important factor is the numbers of links from other sites to your site, many links to your homepage will lead to that Google is considering you’re homepage to be important. Google also categories links, if you have a link to your homepage from an important site like Microsoft, then this link will be very strong and valuable, links from smaller sites will not be as important for your ranking. You can always check the rank on any site from www.pagerankme.com Here are some easy steps you can start with: 1. Link directories: There are a lot of different pages where you can post links and you’re homepage. This is a great way to start, these links you get from these pages are not so strong but it’s better than nothing. In most cases you need to manually post you’re website on each page, so it will take some time but it’s worth it. Here are some good directories to start with, most important of these are the ODP-site. ODP - Open Directory Project http://www.dmoz.org Librarians' Internet Index http://www.lii.org Jayde.com - The B2B Search Engine http://www.jayde.com Busybits Web Directory http://www.busybits.com World Site Index http://www.worldsiteindex.com Web World Directory http://www.webworldindex.com VXbox.com - Web Directory http://www.vxbox.com 2. List three keywords: You should optimize the site for a few good keywords, this should be done with good consideration because it’s important to know these before you start with the optimize 3. Look at the top search results: Now you have the keywords, try to search in Google and look at the top search results, what title did they use? How is their site built? They are in top for a reason, learn from them. It is also possible to find out which pages that are linking to that site, just go to http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ and investigate their site. Maybe some links come from pages where you can get a link as well. 4. Optimize the site: Here you can do a lot, but start with optimize the Title, page content and the META-information. Title: You're Title of the page should contain you're keywords, a recommendation is to never exceed 60 characters in a title, it should be around 10 words, of course It should also be a title that brings attention from users. Meta-description: This information is used by the search engine but can also be seen by users, so try to make a selling text containing your keywords. The site keywordperformance.com recommended a length of twelve to twenty four words. 5. Link on your own site: I didn’t know this in the beginning, but Google also look at the links you have on your site to the different pages. So if you have a very important page on your site, try to link to that page several times on your site to give Google a hint that it’s an important page for the site. You can find more information in Google but I tried to give you a simplified overview.
